While this production won’t fool many skeptics (at least I hope not), I can only imagine that the same audiences that lap up shows about Bigfoot, ghosts, psychics, etc. Substitute Mermaids for Bigfoot, Chupacabra, the Loch Ness monster, ghosts and aliens and it’s hard to make a distinction between what’s real but faked, and what’s really fake. It’s remarkable how well this fake documentary mimics actual programs claiming to reveal actual creatures. They’re pals with dolphins, with whom they often hunt or play together in the surf. Just as Bigfoot is often given supernatural and noble attributes in popular culture, ‘Mermaids’ embodies the new species with intelligence, altruism and compassion. In so doing, they discover clues of the existence of an intelligent primate species - related to humans - that has evolved to adapt to an aquatic life, just as dolphin and whale ancestors did millions of years ago. As far as the existence of Mermaids is concerned, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) still maintains that there is no evidence of any such aquatic humanoids.The slick program uses a documentary style to tell a fictional crypto-zoological tale of earnest, young and attractive scientists who are investigating whale and dolphin beachings. While some people welcomed these documentaries, others also criticized the channel for using deceptive marketing techniques. So these video messages of Animal Planet claiming to show existence of Mermaids are stories of fiction and hoax. The show’s producers wanted people to think the videos were real, which is why they were made in a documentary-style. However, all this was only to promote interest of viewers. The show presented both these documentaries as if to provide sufficient evidence for the existence of mermaids. Interestingly, the Animal Planet’s Monster Week show again featured Mermaids in 2013 with a title called ‘ Mermaids: The New Evidence‘, featuring another hoax video evidence of Mermaid. The film follows the two scientists who tracked the whale beachings for years and delivers first-hand, on-camera accounts of what they claim to have discovered. While several people thought these Animal Planet’s documentaries on existence of Mermaids could to be true, they all are part of their documentary fiction movie called ‘ Mermaids: The Body Found‘, and was created for Animal Planet’s first-ever Monster Week, between May 21-28, 2012.
